Ames Construction has been on-site at Salt Lake City International Airport since 2016, performing multiple work packages for the airport’s massive redevelopment project. The terminal reconstruction effort is proceeding while the airport remains operational, requiring Ames and other contractors to work around airport traffic, in-use facilities, and air operations. Ames work packages have included:

White Paving: In 2022, crews performed white paving projects that opened a two-way taxiway connecting the airport’s two new terminals and repaired and realigned a second taxiway that feeds all of the airport’s terminals from one of the runways. Crews worked five to six days a week amid live air traffic to keep the taxiway projects moving forward. Ames’ white paving crew placed 62,000 cubic yards of concrete and 20,000 cubic yards of lean concrete base to open the taxiways on time.

Site Work: Working in a small construction footprint, crews performed excavation and backfill of grade beams, pile caps, and stem walls for the new concourse and terminal. The project scope also included backfill of the utility and pedestrian tunnel under the new terminal.

Site Enabling: Crews performed demolition work and installation of utilities for the new terminal, central utility plant, and concourse, along with the demolition of rental car facilities and installation of temporary roadways. Ames produced all aggregates for the roadways and installed a sanitary sewer pump station and two duplex submersible force main systems.
