Ames Construction was the prime contractor for multiple projects at Sky Harbor Airport including runway replacement and terminal expansion.

The replacement and expansion of the main runway on the north side of the Sky Harbor Airport terminals consisted of removing existing pavement, constructing a new storm drainage system, subgrade correction work, constructing the new concrete pavement over new 4AC base, asphalt shoulders, and all associated electrical work for the new runway.

To allow general aviation use of a portion of the runway throughout the construction period, the replacement of the runway was completed in two phases. Half of the new runway was constructed during the first phase, while general aviation traffic continued to use the remaining 5000 feet of the old runway. Then traffic was switched to the completed section of the new runway, and removal and reconstruction of the other half of the runway was performed. The aggressive schedule required the removal and replacement operations for the entire runway to be completed within 90 calendar days. Ames crews completed this portion of the work a full 10 days ahead of schedule.

The terminal expansion consisted of constructing new ramps, widening existing roadways, building a new flyover bridge and widening an existing bridge over the Salt River. A protective multi-plate structure was placed over a sewer line and the project included landscape graphics and rustication pieces on the bridges and walls.
